The drawbacks of having fre$hman friends.

Today in Martial Arts we had some good ol' novice black belt testing for Jeremy and Cristina, who apparently has lots of freshman friends. So they came in to watch. Yes, "they," meaning the little Asian freshmen with uncontrollable laughter, short attention spans, and video game obsessions. And all of them just chose to camp out in the back except Anna, because she's cool and can hang in sixth period even though she already had MA once that day. She's a lil' riduh`. :]

That's not even the point of this, but I'm going to beat around the bush some more first.

Last year I wasn't the only freshman in my 5th period MA class, but I was the only one who was willing to get dressed and work out every single day. Being a n00b in the advanced class is no fun when you're the youngest and everyone else is years older, is of a higher rank, and thinks you're just some loser freshman with no talent in anything. I'm pretty sure a bunch of them thought I was annoying because I was younger and obviously had the same uncontrollable laughter, short attention span, and random nerdy references coming out of my mouth as the ninth grade kiddies who came in today. But I lived with it, and eventually I guess I started getting more serious? x] So this year, even though I was disappointed when I turned out to be enrolled in 6th period MA, I was happy that I wasn't the youngest anymore, that I at least outranked somebody- even if it was just some ignorant freshman. >;] And besides, some of the older people were familiar faces from last year, so they knew what to expect from me.

But I still escape to 5th period for workouts every now and then, and there's a big difference between 5th period and 6th period. Despite the fact that both classes do the same drills and practice the same level kicks, the 5th period class feels like a beginning class because of all the laughter. It's not that I'm opposed to fun during working out (because working out=fun in my book), but there's a lot of snickering and "OHMAHGAWD!!!!!!!!!1"s while Sullivan is explaining things. On the other hand, 6th period tends to be more serious and tentative. We do the drills, and I find that my classmates have better technique than the students in fifth period. Maybe I'm biased, but I also believe that this is because my older peers are more competent and have the drive to practice for longer periods of time. I'm convinced that freshman are easily distracted. Like, WHAT THE HECK IS SO AMUSING?!

So today, as the band of small Asian ninth graders sat in the back for the test, I was half-watching the test and half-observing them. They either had a blank, apathetic, amazed, or 0_0 expression while watching Cristina and Jeremy exemplify their hardcore skills. At some point Jane Ly decided to whip out her phone and record everything to remember Cristina's performance.

Close to the end of the test, Sullivan called up Lily, Sarah, Miranda, and I to feed her prompts. ME?! WTF?! I can't go up against her!! He assigns me to give a front kick->tackle combination, but COME ON! I knew it wasn't going to work, and Cristina proved to be good at anticipating tackles because Mr. Sullivan told all of us to incorporate a tackle with our attacks. I was last so everyone definitely remembered me. I kinda just walked up, bowed, and stood there for a couple of seconds to gather my thoughts and hope that I would come close to being successful. I tried to throw a fast and sloppy front kick to distract her from my incoming tackle, but she was too prepared for it. I couldn't even get my arms around her. D: I kept going for it though, but she did something and the "fight" ended up on the mat. I don't even know, dude. She mounted me, hit the the mat with an onslaught of strikes to symbolize the barrage of attacks she would unleash on me (should I have actually posed a threat), and stood up victorious. When I found the light again, I was on my side facing the laughing line of freshman, with Jane's phone aimed at me. I tried to get up calmly and with dignity, but everyone was still chuckling from the image of me getting uber pwned. I admit, it must have been quite the spectacle. >xD

I know exactly where that video is going to end up. I want to remember it forever. I have mad love for Jane Ly now. ^-^
